The holidays are fast approaching and if you’re like us, you still have a long list of things to do in preparation for your holiday gatherings. Whether it be putting up decorations, buying presents, hosting and attending parties, or participating in other holiday activities; it feels like there is not enough time to get it all done and it can feel overwhelming. The beauty of this season is that in all the hustle and bustle of the holidays, we frequently begin to see a change in our communities and often times, in ourselves. Most times, the change is subtle but if you take a step back you can see it all around. Strangers say a friendly hello and a holiday greeting as they pass one another in town. A group of coworkers decides to donate time to help provide meals to those that are hungry. Neighbors gather a collection of money to provide a nice Christmas for a family in need. Whatever it may be, this season has a way of letting our hearts open and care more for those around us. As we feel the spirit of the holidays we want to be around the people we love. Reaching out to our loved ones, friends, and family, to reconnect and create new memories together is a special time. It’s a great time to get together and show our love and gratitude for each other by spending time together and making the effort to brighten each other’s day with acts of service and gifts. It’s important during this holiday season to remember your elderly family, neighbors, and friends. Whether they are in a skilled nursing facility or at home they can always use some holiday cheer.

How to Spread Holiday Cheer

Ask them what were some of their favorite holiday memories from when they were younger. There is something special about learning from past generations how things used to be and hearing what fond memories have stayed with them over the years. Music is a great way to revive memories of the past. Ask them what their favorite holiday song is or who their favorite singer is. Then with a quick Internet search, you can pull up a classic Christmas song for them to sing along to. If they recognize the voice and the song, it may bring a smile to their face, a tapping of their fingers, or if they are able, maybe a dance in their step.

Recreate one of their favorite holiday recipes or treats. Similar to music, a certain taste can open a door to the memories of the past. This one may be a little tricky but if you are lucky you can recreate something that has become special to them.

Creating memories like these with the ones we love will become a gift to you that will be long lasting. Expressing gratitude to those we love and to those that we serve will bring a love in your heart that we too can spread “good tidings of great joy” and “Peace on Earth, goodwill toward men.” Have a safe and wonderful holiday season, from our families to yours.
